  • Title: An Alternative for Nurses in the Second Half of Their Professional Career

Abstract

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) have been the gold standard for measuring the effects of health-care services for 50 years. However, RCTs describe neither the Real-World Effectiveness (RWE) nor the added Value (VAL) of these services for patients, but only the theoretical proof of principle (POP) under experimental conditions. Over the past 30 years, our group has developed the method that can be used to measure the RWE and VAL of healthcare services that reaches the patient. This document-tation method is suitable for experienced caregivers who want to use their knowledge rather than their strength to help in the second half of their professional career.
The lecture (and a possible 120 min workshop) describe (1) the three conditions of care (the experimental Randomized Controlled Trial; RCT, the non-experimental Pragmatic Controlled Trial; PCT, and the non-experimental Care As Usual; CAU). Figure 1 shows the difference of RCTs and PCTs. (2) two functional and twelve structural elements that are different in the three conditions of care, (3) the difference of experimental and pragmatic studies with or without systematic analysis of outcomes, and finally (4) a summary of added value to patients, society, hospitals, and the nurses.
