  • Title: Exploring Effectiveness of Telemetry in Patients with Cardiac Conditions, In Acute Care Wards A Scoping Review

Abstract

Aim: The advent of advanced monitoring technologies has revolutionized the management of patients with cardiac conditions, particularly in acute care settings. Among these innovations, telemetry has emerged as a pivotal tool in the continuous surveillance of patients, providing real-time data on heart rate, rhythm, and other vital signs. This review aims to comprehensively describe how telemetries effectively aid in patients with cardiac conditions  (main outcome) in acute care wards.

Design: The scoping review examined various primary and secondary studies, using the Arksey & O'Malley (2005) five-stage framework.

Methods: A systematic search was performed in 7 academic databases (EMBASE, CINAHL, Medline, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, PubMed and Scopus). Grey literature from ProQuest Dissertations and Theses and Google Scholar was also sourced. Studies were included in the review if published in English and featured solely general ward nurses as participants. Key information (author, year, aim, and findings) was extracted from studies, and collated into a chart for screening. Two reviewers screened the studies autonomously.

Results: A narrative summary was adopted to provide a descriptive overview. Thematic analysis was performed to synthesise and categorise data into three main themes: 1) Contributing factors, 2) Experiences and 3) Coping Strategies. Limitations include infrequent studies investigating the research aim and infrequent studies depicting the issue.

Conclusion: This review highlights how the usage of telemetries affects the patient care for patients diagnosed with cardiac conditions. Future research may explore how alternatives to telemetries impact patient care in the long run and how healthcare professionals can utilise telemetries for critically ill patients.
